Colour harmony — what each mode means
Complementary & Split
Complementary — the colour directly opposite on the wheel (180°). High contrast, bold, vibrant. Best for CTA emphasis.
Split-complementary — the two colours adjacent to the complement (150° and 210°). Slightly softer and more nuanced.
Triadic & Tetradic
Triadic — three colours evenly spaced (120° apart). Visually rich and balanced. Popular in illustration and branding.
Tetradic — four colours 90° apart. Most complex harmony; works best when one colour dominates the composition.
Analogous & Monochromatic
Analogous — colours adjacent on the wheel (±30°). Naturally harmonious, cohesive, calming. Found everywhere in nature.
Monochromatic — varies only lightness and saturation of a single hue. The most restrained and elegant palette for minimal UI design.
