How it works

The image is downscaled and its pixels are fed into a median-cut quantiser: all colours start in one box, and the box with the widest colour spread is repeatedly split at its median along its longest axis until the requested number of boxes remains. Each box’s average becomes a palette colour, sorted by how much of the image it covers. It’s the same family of algorithm GIF encoders use — and it runs entirely on your device.
